Morrisey Reveals Cover of Lou Reed’s ‘Satellite of Love’

By Phin Upham

In memory of the late Lou Reed, the former frontman of The Smiths has released a cover of Reed’s “Satellite of Love” on December 2nd. The release will come in a seven-inch picture disc or a 12-inch vinyl version, along with the digital versions available through iTunes and Amazon. The vinyl version will include the extra track “You’re Gonna Need Someone on Your Side,” a track co-produced by Mick Ronson who worked with Lou Reed during the original recording of Satellite.

Morissey describes the track as very personal, admitting that he meant it as an homage to one of his greatest influences. “[Lou Reed] has been there all of my life,” Morrisey said of Lou Reed after his death. “He will always be pressed to my heart. Thank God for those, like Lou, who move within their own laws, otherwise imagine how dull the world would be.”

Morrissey recorded the track live at The Chelsea Ballroom inside the Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas on Nov. 25, 2011. The vinyl version will be available starting January 28th. All formats will include four previously unreleased tracks that were recorded back in 2008.
